Background
The coffeehouse is an important and distinctive social and cultural institution deeply embedded in modern notions of public opinion and civic society.
We want to look into the changing face of the English establishment for the sale of the hot drink, and draw a portrait of its frequenters, examine and experience the talk they have and taste the social history of coffee. There are a couple of conceptual issues here to address: “What is quintessentially English about drinking coffee and visiting coffeehouses?” and “What is the future of an English coffee house?”.
A deeper insight into the subject matter will inevitably reveal some distinctive modes of sociability the English coffeehouse provides. Emphatically called a “Penny University” it was a place for like-minded scholars to congregate, to read, as well as to learn from and to debate with each other. It offered an alternative space for the promotion of virtuosic interests. Therefore, there is a poll to examine some social aspects of coffee consumption, as well as a few games on debating, unusual angles and prompting roles promised.
